| According to uSwitch, those borrowers who choose credit cards over cheap loans - and opt to only pay off the minimum amount each month - risk extending the time it takes to repay debt by up to 30 years. The warning follows news that both Barclaycard and M&S Money have dropped their minimum payment amounts to less than 2.5 per cent.Barclays is currently asking customers for a monthly installment of 2.25 per cent, down from 2.5 per cent, while borrowers with M&S Money credit cards can pay as little as 2.5 per cent a month, down from three per cent. Incidentally, the price comparison service suggests that to help negate debt management problems, the credit card industry should introduce a minimum repayment limit of three per cent. "There is little justification for setting minimum repayments at just two per cent and we believe that it is time that the industry agreed a standard minimum repayment amount of at least three per cent on all credit cards", said uSwitch personal finance expert Mike Naylor.He added that despite moves to put 'health warnings' on credit card statements and to make literature easier to understand, the majority of borrowers still do not comprehend the problems associated with only paying the minimum amount each month. Mr Naylor suggested that by only paying off credit card debt in small amounts consumers could end up paying off mortgages and secured loans before clearing card balances."In an environment of rising interest rates where personal debt in the UK has reached a staggering 1,325 billion pounds, of which credit card debt accounts for 54 billion, consumers could now finish repaying their mortgage before their credit card, despite the huge disparity in sums borrowed", he elaborated. uSwitch research found that 3.5 million Britons could spend 30 years struggling with debt management if choosing to only make minimum repayments. However paying a little more each month could see borrowers cut their "debt sentence" by 15 years and generate collective interest savings of 5.5 billion pounds.Figures released today by the British Bankers Association (BBA) suggest that borrowers are slowly beginning to turn away from credit cards and seek out cheap loans for their financial needs instead. Lending on plastic fell by 0.1 billion pounds over the course of June, the association revealed, while personal loans remained popular. Borrowing on loans and overdrafts was up by 0.1 billion pounds last month and secured loan lending grew by an underlying 5. 1 billion pounds.Meanwhile, Toby Clark, senior finance analyst at Mintel, recently said that Britons are "wildly underestimating" how much money they owe on credit cards and personal loans. The expert was speaking after research from the firm revealed that 21 million consumers owe 100 billion pounds more than they estimate.

| I expected to get some traffic and hopefully some sales. I would have laughed if you told me those early words would still be floating around the web over five years later. Well, smack me on the wrist and call me shorty, they are. You would think that's a good thing and it is except... That's the operative word, 'except.' The little critters are still multiplying around the web like rabbits in heat, but there is a little problem. Actually, the problem isn't so little. This darn problem haunts me. At least a couple of times a week it drives me insane. Whenever I run across it I feel like the dullest axe in the shed. If I were double jointed, I'd kick myself in the 'hello there.' So what is this dumb mistake that: Has me pulling my hair out by the roots Has me kicking myself over and over Haunts me like that house in Amityville Outdated resource boxes with links leading to that dreaded 404 error. I'm afraid to guess how much money and traffic I'm losing. It's a nightmare. Those babies are doing their part, but crazy John has made the ultimate dumb mistake. How did this happen? How could I end up looking like the 'village idiot?' The only answer I can give is, 'I didn't realize.' I never realized how viral articles were. I had no idea that little articles could circle the globe for years. I didn't see the big picture. I wrote those resource boxes with no regard for the future. How can you avoid making the same mistake? 1. If you're going to promote an affiliate program, don't link directly. Sometimes programs just disappear. Other times, you may find the program hasn't lived up to your expectations. Set up a redirect page on your website. If the program disappears, or you no longer wish to promote it, you can reset the page to lead wherever you choose. 2. Don't lead directly to your opt in list. You never know when a list may change their pricing or services. For one reason or another you may change listservs. A better option is to set up a page on your site to capture addresses. If you leave your present service, you can edit the page to lead to your new list. If I had set up my links according to option number one for affiliate programs, or two for list building, I'd have kept the leads flowing and the orders coming for years. | According to research carried out by Alliance & Leicester, one in four (25 per cent) consumers use a personal loan to buy a second-hand car, with 12 per cent borrowing the money to help them purchase a brand new vehicle. Meanwhile, some three per cent of respondents took out a loan to fund the acquisition of a motorbike or caravan.Commenting on the figures, Richard Al-Dabbagh, senior personal loans manager for Alliance & Leicester claimed that it "isn't too surprising" that "a lot of people" are looking to use personal loans to fund such purchases. He argued that many forecourt finance deals are uncompetitive with an average annual percentage rate (APR) of about 20 per cent, compared to loans from other providers which offer a typical APR of around six per cent. "A little more surprising, perhaps, is that a small but growing number of people are getting a personal loan to purchase a caravan. These might be an eco-minded few, but it seems an increasing number of people are turning their backs on airport queues, train delays and other negative holiday certainties," he added.Meanwhile, using a personal loan as a means of debt consolidation was reported to be the second most popular use of the product among those surveyed. According to the financial services firm, 34 per cent of borrowers are looking to reorganise their finances by converting debts accrued from various forms of borrowing, such as credit and store cards, into a single monthly repayment.Those living in London and the rest of the south-east of England were reported to have a higher than average take-up of personal loans for debt consolidation purposes, with 36 per cent borrowing for this reason. Whereas consumers in the north-west are said to be the most likely to borrow money to help pay for a "holiday of a lifetime".The study also showed that some one in five of borrowers (20 per cent) surveyed use loans to carry out home improvements. However, this proportion rose to 23 per cent for people living in Scotland.For funding a wedding, people in Northern Ireland were found to be most likely in the country to look towards a personal loan. Meanwhile, figures released by moneysupermarket earlier this month revealed that 15 per cent of potential brides and grooms plan to take out a personal loan to fund their big day. About 41 per cent of couples intend to use credit cards to finance their wedding. Earlier today, a study released by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service indicated that personal loans account for 56.4 per cent of debts owed by Britons aged between 18 and 24, in comparison to 39.9 per cent of 40 to 59-year-olds. Overall, young people were reported to be in an average debt of 12,790 pounds, with credit card and overdraft use responsible for some 28.5 and 7.3 per cent of borrowing respectively.
